First Grade Curriculum Information
Math:
We use the Everyday Math Program to teach math in the first grade. We learn skills and practice them in fun games with partners and in our math journal.

We also use Digi Blocks throughout the year to help us learn about place value and number sense. These are great tools!

Writing Workshop:
We will be writing different genres this year; personal narrative, non- fiction how tos and all abouts, poetry, persuasive, realistic fiction and more! We will write daily and will follow the philosophy of Lucy Calkin’s writing workshop. Here is a link with her units of study.

Handwriting:
We use Handwriting Without Tears for our handwriting curriculum. The focus is on lower case letters in first grade. There are some great songs that we like to sing to remember letter formation. For more information:

In first grade we teach phonemic awareness, letters and sounds, reading words, writing words, processing strategies in reading, and processing strategies in writing through mini lessons and activities in the Fountas and Pinnell Phonics and Word Study program. We also work with words through our shared reading.

We will also have a daily reading workshop. We will focus on strategies to use with tricky words, fluency, retelling, comprehension skills and more!
